Clemens Hlauschek

General Information

I am a graduate student (Computational Intelligence, Technical Mathematics) at the Vienna University of Technology. Recently Some time ago, I returned from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where I started working on my master's thesis as a Junior Research Specialist and Marshallplan scholarship holder. For my bachelor project (I finished my bachelor degree in Software Engineering in 2010), as well as during a couple of internships at the Secure Systems Lab in Vienna, I contributed to ANUBIS and added malware clustering to the system.

I am also deeply associated with the ESSE security group. I work as a security consultant for RISE - Research Industrial Systems Engineering GmbH, examining and improving the security of large-scale IT systems, and I am co-heading the company's security division. I am a quite inactive member of the Metalab in Vienna. I also study Political Science at the University of Vienna. I love poetry, literature, philosophy, and music. I am a fan of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. One of my strongest motivations for doing what I do is to have a positive impact on tomorrow's (and the days after tomorrow's) hyperconnected and technically transformed societies, and to try to secure human dignity in a world ruled by threatingly capable AIs and robots.

My main research interest combines different aspects of systems security with theory. On a systems side, I get fascinated by both low level (i.e., close to the hardware, memory corruptions, assembler code, side-channels), as well as high level issues (e.g., Haskell, applied cryptography, OS design). My interests in theory are dominated by issues in theoretical cryptography and provable security, but I am also interested in the mathematical foundations of computer science, logic, and artificial intelligence. My belief is that the most important and transforming insights come from interdisciplinary work and keeping an open mind.

When I am not doing math, I actively engage in hacking competitions. Though some recent competitions (e.g., PlaidCTF) have gotten quite broad in scope (covering various areas of CS) and I often end up doing math anyways, although I also truely enjoy getting wasted writing binary exploits. In the past, I played with We0wnYou, Shellphish, EpicFail, and I am a founding member of defragmented.brains. Those are team names, in case you wonder. Some of them are very well-known.
